Shannon Barnes, LMT — Massage Therapist in West Des Moines

Shannon Barnes is a Licensed Massage Therapist with over 20 years of experience. She works with patients across every stage of life — from prenatal care through older adulthood — and brings a range of modalities that most therapists don’t offer under one roof.

Her prenatal work comes from two decades of actually doing it. Shannon understands how the body changes across pregnancy — the shifting load on the low back, the hip tension that builds through the second trimester, the round ligament discomfort that gets dismissed as normal, the sleep disruption that compounds everything. She adapts positioning and technique to each stage, and does so with the kind of attentiveness that comes from having seen these patterns thousands of times.

Her work with older adults follows the same philosophy: meet the body where it is. Tissue changes with age. Pressure that would be therapeutic at 35 requires recalibration at 75. The goal isn’t just pain relief — it’s maintaining the function and mobility that keeps people doing what they want to do.

Beyond those two specialties, Shannon offers a full range of therapeutic modalities:

Swedish Massage Longer, flowing strokes that increase circulation, reduce cortisol, and support nervous system regulation. Often more therapeutic than people expect.

Deep Tissue Massage Targeted work into deeper muscle layers to address chronic tension, adhesions, and restricted tissue that surface-level massage doesn’t reach.

Sports-Specific Massage Focused on athletes and active people — pre-event preparation, post-event recovery, or addressing the muscular patterns that repetitive activity creates over time.

Cupping Suction cups applied to specific areas create a decompressive effect on the underlying tissue — pulling rather than pressing — which increases local circulation, reduces fascial restriction, and helps release deep muscular tension that compression alone doesn’t reach. Many patients find it works well on areas that have been resistant to other approaches.

Reflexology Targeted pressure applied to specific reflex points on the feet that correspond to other areas and systems throughout the body. The mechanism involves the nervous system’s response to precise pressure along established pathways. Patients often report systemic effects — reduced tension, improved sleep, a sense of whole-body calm — that extend well beyond the feet.

Reiki Reiki is a light-touch practice that works through the nervous system to reduce stress response and support the body’s own recovery process. It requires stillness and receptivity rather than active pressure — which makes it a different experience than conventional massage, and the right one for certain patients at certain times. People who’ve had Reiki describe it as a deep reset — the kind of quiet that’s genuinely hard to access any other way.

What connects all of Shannon’s work is the same thing: she pays attention, adapts, and brings 20+ years of knowing what actually works to every session.
